This original acrylic painting on canvas measures 20” x 24” and is 1.5” deep.

The backstory: I hate wasting things, and this especially applies to art materials. So after a painting party with some friends in my studio, I gathered up all their left-over palettes and started applying the paint to a salvaged canvas I had on hand.

I decided along the way that I’d make a little game or challenge out of it: To create a series of different sized rectangles, each a unique color. I was free-handing all of the shapes (no apologies—I prefer the imperfect wonkiness) and also became very interested in the borders between them.

This challenged continued for several months, whenever I found myself with some excess paint.

Being a lover of color and balance, my other objective was to create an eyeball-pleasing arrangement to “feast” on. You can see several stages of the process in the photos. I was working horizontally, but ultimately decided to hang it vertically, as in the first photo.

The painting is shown in photo #1 against a white wall, however all side edges are painted a deep turquoise. This work is ready to hang and needs no framing.
